General Dental Care

Dr. Heather Johnson loves working in her hometown. Being born and raised in Grand Forks, she is dedicated to providing high quality dental care. Research tells us that oral health benefits the health of your entire body! So don’t delay in scheduling your check up today.

During your appointment, Dr. Johnson will also talk to you about what you can do to keep a healthy smile at home. Don’t forget to brush your teeth twice per day. Use a circular motion and make sure to brush your teeth, gums, and tongue. It takes an extra minute, but flossing once per day is important. This will clean between your teeth and keep plaque at bay.

Sealants

When you eat, small pieces of food and bacteria can get stuck in the grooves of your teeth. This can put your teeth at risk for decay, especially in hard-to-reach areas. We can apply a sealant, which helps to protect your teeth. We typically place sealants on children, but sometimes adults benefit from them too.

 Hydroxyapatite Treatments

At 1101 Dental, we offer all patients 10% nano-hydroxyapatite treatments. In the past fluoride varnish treatments were used to remineralize and harden the enamel. However, science has brought a new way to accomplish this!

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral that makes up about 97% of tooth enamel. So, when you are looking at your teeth, you are literally looking at the mineral hydroxyapatite (:

During routine hygiene visits, we can now apply a hydroxyapatite varnish to your teeth. Hydroxyapatite varnish offers a biocompatible, non-toxic, and effective way to strengthen enamel, reduce sensitivity, and reduce the risk of cavities. We recommend regular hydroxyapatite varnish treatments for children and adults at their routine dental visits.

 Hydroxyapatite Toothpastes

There are now 2 main types of toothpastes you can use at home on a regular basis for tooth decay prevention: fluoride toothpaste and hydroxyapatite toothpaste. In the past fluoride toothpaste has been the most popular in the US. However, science has now brought us a new type of toothpaste (hydroxyapatite!) that is just as effective as fluoride toothpaste but is nontoxic if ingested!

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste has been around for decades (mostly in other countries), but is now gaining popularity in the US. It is important to know that currently hydroxyapatite toothpastes are not regulated in the US and many brands do not follow the science so is therefore not as effective. It is important to know what to look for when buying your hydroxyapatite toothpaste.

Science shows that hydroxyapatite toothpaste must be a 10% concentration and have nano sized particles in order for it to be as effective as a fluoride toothpaste. Dr. Jen's hydroxyapatite toothpaste follows the science and doesn’t put any fillers or toxic chemicals in it (bonus: it is made in Minnesota!).We trust Dr. Jen’s brand!

When used on a regular basis, hydroxyapatite toothpaste hardens teeth for cavity prevention, decreases sensitivity, and brightens smiles.

Nightguards & Mouthguards

Do you grind your teeth or clench your jaw? If the answer is yes, we may inquire for more information as grinding your teeth can be a symptom of sleep apnea. Regardless, we can create a custom night guard for you to wear at night-time. This will help to protect your teeth and keep them strong. You will be happy to hear that this can also help decrease migraines, headaches, and jaw pain!
If you are an athlete, make sure to ask the staff at 1101 Dental if a mouthguard is right for you. Contact sports put you at risk for injuries to the face. Our doctors can make a special mouthguard for athletes that help protect your teeth. Whether you love hockey, basketball, or football, don’t forget to ask our doctors if an athletic mouthguard will work for you.

Oral Cancer Screenings

During each exam, we will look for any signs of oral cancer. We will be sure to check your lips, throat, tongue, roof of the mouth, inner cheeks, and gums.

Periodontal Treatment

When you eat and drink, you get plaque on your teeth. Plaque is a film from food, bacteria, and saliva. During your dental visit, our skilled dental providers will remove the plaque from your teeth. Over time, if the plaque stays on your teeth, it turns into a tougher substance called tartar. Tartar destroys your gums and bone. Signs that you may have periodontal (gum) disease are red, swollen, and bleeding gums. During your routine checkup at 1101 Dental, we will examine your mouth for signs of gum disease. The earlier we tackle gum disease, the better for you and your health!

Proper Home Care

Your personal home care plays an important role in maintaining a healthy smile. Your home care starts by eating balanced meals, reducing the number of snacks you eat, and correctly using the various dental aids that help control the plaque and bacteria that cause dental disease.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft bristle electric toothbrush. Make sure to brush all surfaces of each tooth and your gums.
  • Daily flossing helps clean in-between teeth and under the gumline. It also disrupts plaque colonies from building up.
  • Incorporating a waterpik, tongue scraper, mouth rinse, soft picks, or an oral probiotic may be right for you. We’ll be sure to guide you based on your needs.
